When I was younger, the prospect of my ‘twenties’ seemed like some kind of promised land. An unknown and exciting era of my life, where everything would just fall into place.

The bag goes under several names, depending on time and place, but to me the Chinatown tote has always been my Dalston shopper. It conjures up memories of my grandmother’s cupboard under the stairs in East London where she would store heavy and bulky items not needed for everyday use.

Over Christmas I was in the Caribbean with friends reminiscing about the music we grew up on; our playlist included So Solid Crew, Ms. Dynamite, Shola Ama, Tina Moore and DJ Luck and Mc Neat. Over the music, conversation turned to the things we would wear when we snuck out to raves. We weren’t the original participants to the garage scene, it would have been our older brothers and sisters, yet it was the sounds they listened to and what they wore that filtered down and gave us an initial insight into UK garage as we followed closely behind.
Do ‘Dad shoes’ deserve a place in mainstream fashion?
Trainers. Worn for sport, fashion or to commute to work. A wardrobe staple and in some cases, a status symbol. Trainers are an integral part of both high street and high end fashion. Walking around, I sometimes think to myself ‘there really are some ‘ugly’ trainers out there’, and when they override my feed, I’m baffled as to how they have become so popular. However, after seeing similar styles reappear time and time again, I nearly always find myself wanting the exact pair I’ve been openly slating.
How to survive Berlin as a basic bitch
If you haven’t been to Berlin, you will have probably heard things like how it is the ‘edgy hipster capital of Europe’, or to be ‘careful what you wear and don’t let the bouncers hear you speak English in the Berghain queue’ (that is, if you were prepared to wait in said three-hour-long queue). If you have been to Berlin, you will know that these pearls of wisdom from your fellow globetrotting pals hold at least some truth.
